MERITUS Talent are working with one of the UK's largest defence contractors who are working very closely with the UK Royal Navy, for the recruitment of a Hardware Engineering Manager to join their South London office on a permanent basis. Hybrid working is available, with a 9-day fortnight an option.
We’re looking for an experienced Hardware Engineering Manager to lead and grow a team of mechanical, electrical and product design engineers in a highly regulated defence environment. Based in South London, this is a key leadership role where you'll be responsible for the functional capability, quality, and performance of the hardware engineering team.

What you’ll be doing:

Leading and managing a team of engineers across mechanical, electrical and product design disciplines

Overseeing capability planning, recruitment, and career development within the function

Ensuring quality delivery of engineering output across multiple programmes and projects

Providing technical oversight on design reviews, plans and documentation

Supporting continuous improvement and aligning ways of working with company frameworks

Managing tools and assets required by the team

Driving compliance with engineering standards, processes and export controls

Acting as the functional point of contact for the hardware engineering capability within the organisation
What we’re looking for:

Degree-qualified in a relevant engineering subject (electrical, mechanical or similar) or extensive relevant experience

Strong background in hardware engineering (mechanical or electrical), ideally within the defence, aerospace, or maritime sectors

Experience managing and developing high-performing engineering teams

Understanding of the full product lifecycle, from design through to manufacture and delivery

Knowledge of hardware defence standards, DfM, FEA, safety and compliance (REACH, RoHS etc.)

Familiarity with analysis techniques, production methods, and engineering tools
