MERITUS Talent are working with one of the UK's largest defence contractors who are working very closely with the UK Royal Navy, for the recruitment of a Hardware Engineering Manager to join their South London office on a permanent basis. Hybrid working is available, with a 9-day fortnight an option.

We’re looking for an experienced Hardware Engineering Manager to lead and grow a team of mechanical, electrical and product design engineers in a highly regulated defence environment. Based in South London, this is a key leadership role where you'll be responsible for the functional capability, quality, and performance of the hardware engineering team.

This is more than a job - it’s a chance to shape and deliver technology that underpins the Royal Navy and wider UK defence systems.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Leading and managing a team of engineers across mechanical, electrical and product design disciplines

  • Overseeing capability planning, recruitment, and career development within the function

  • Ensuring quality delivery of engineering output across multiple programmes and projects

  • Providing technical oversight on design reviews, plans and documentation

  • Supporting continuous improvement and aligning ways of working with company frameworks

  • Managing tools and assets required by the team

  • Driving compliance with engineering standards, processes and export controls

  • Acting as the functional point of contact for the hardware engineering capability within the organisation

What we’re looking for:

  • Degree-qualified in a relevant engineering subject (electrical, mechanical or similar) or extensive relevant experience

  • Strong background in hardware engineering (mechanical or electrical), ideally within the defence, aerospace, or maritime sectors

  • Experience managing and developing high-performing engineering teams

  • Understanding of the full product lifecycle, from design through to manufacture and delivery

  • Knowledge of hardware defence standards, DfM, FEA, safety and compliance (REACH, RoHS etc.)

  • Familiarity with analysis techniques, production methods, and engineering tools

Why apply?

  • Salary: £75,000 – £85,000

  • Location: South London with hybrid working options

  • Flexible schedule: Optional compressed working week with every other Friday off

  • Benefits: Private healthcare, performance bonuses, career development support, and more

This is a great opportunity to step into a leadership role where your work directly contributes to national defence capabilities. You’ll be part of a forward-thinking engineering environment with the autonomy to shape your team and drive technical excellence.
